The New Turkish Lira Note and Coin Designs

For their equivalent values, the new Turkish lira note and coin designs are very similar to the old lira designs. The main difference is the number of zeros. Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, is still featured on the front of all the coins and notes and the pictures on the back remain the same. The new and old notes and new coins are displayed and described below.

100 New Turkish Lira (YTL)




The back of the 100 New Turkish Lira features a picture of Ishak Pasa Palace near Dogubayazit, far eastern Turkey.



50 New Turkish Lira (YTL)




The picture on the 50 New Turkish Lira is from Cappadocia, central Turkey.



20 New Turkish Lira (YTL) / 20 million Old Turkish Lira (TRL)







The ruins of Ephesus in western Turkey feature on the 20,000,000 old lira and 20 new lira.

10 New Turkish Lira (YTL) / 10 million Old Turkish Lira (TRL)







The old 10,000,000 lira and new 10 lira display Turkish sailor Piri Reis's world map from the year 1513.



5 New Turkish Lira (YTL) / 5 million Old Turkish Lira (TRL)







The 5,000,000 old and 5 new lira notes have a picture of Ataturk's Mausoleum in Ankara.



1 New Turkish Lira (YTL) / 1 million Old Turkish Lira (TRL)









Ataturk Dam from Sanliurfa, south eastern Turkey, is featured on the 1,000,000 old lira and 1 lira new notes. Defying logic, the 1 New Turkish Lira will be issued in both note and coin forms.



50 New Turkish Kurus (YKr) / 500,000 Old Turkish Lira (TRL)






A Gallipoli war memorial in south western Turkey is displayed on the old 500,000 lira note. This note is equivalent to 50 new kurus.



25 New Turkish Kurus (YKr) / 250,000 Old Turkish Lira (TRL)






The old 250,000 Turkish lira note has a picture of Alanya's red tower in southern Turkey. This note is not very common now and the 250,000 old lira coin is in far more frequent use. Both will be superseded by the 25 new kurus coin.



10, 5 and 1 New Turkish Kurus (YKr)







The above coins are equivalent to 100,000, 50,000 and 10,000 old lira, respectively.
